ITEC is Somerset County Cricket Club’s Official Technology Partner

22nd January 2019

The batsman goes to the crease. He knocks it for six. The crowd goes crazy.

Believe it or not, some people have missed the run. They ask the person next to them what’s happened, then check their phones to see the replay circulating online, filmed on someone’s phone. It could take ages for the video to buffer, and when it does, it’s blurry and stutters.

Somerset County Cricket Club (SCCC) quickly realised a hugely important component of the match-day experience is that spectators want to share the experience of watching the game with each other and friends who can’t make the match. They knew they needed a new digital infrastructure to execute their digital vision.

SCCC turned to ITEC and have made us their Official Technology Partner.

‘A Great Privilege’

We have signed a three-year partnership with SCCC to deliver a complete Technology Managed Service across the Cooper Associates County Ground. There will be prominent ITEC branding across the stadium. The local MailaDoc, part of the ITEC Group, has had a long relationship with the Club and ITEC is thrilled to deepen our bond with the cricket club.

“This partnership is the first of its kind for the Club and we’re very excited about the benefits that this will bring to SCCC.”

Suzanne Roper, SCCC Commercial Sales Director

“As a business we really like what ITEC are all about. They’re a national company with a number of locally based offices and they take their corporate responsibility very seriously,” says Suzanne Roper, SCCC Commercial Sales Director. “Technology is constantly evolving, and it is vital for us to be able to adapt to the changing landscape of the business world. This partnership is the first of its kind for the Club and we’re very excited about the benefits that this will bring to SCCC, ITEC and more importantly our members and supporters.”

The excitement is mutual as Nick Orme, ITEC CEO explains: “We have enjoyed a long relationship with SCCC as the centrepiece of our corporate hospitality and promotional activities as we’ve grown our business across the South West and beyond. To be appointed as their Official Technology Partner is a great privilege and we are excited to now be playing a central part in all the improvements they have planned over the coming years.”

One of the most advanced stadiums in the UK

One of biggest improvements is the installation and management of ground-wide Aruba WiFi designed to improve the match-day experience and handle the hundreds of IoT devices attending each match. Aruba is the world-leading WiFi specialist.

“Ground-wide WiFi has been on our agenda for some time and it’s the next logical step to take when considering the match-day experience and additional value for our members and supporters,” says Sarah Trunks, SCCC Strategy Director. “With the ICC Cricket World Cup coming to Taunton alongside the installation of the new floodlights, now is the perfect opportunity to further our digital vision, and thanks must go to all those who have been involved in the process thus far.”

“ITEC are excited and proud to deliver the technology based 100% around SCCC’s requirements, and provide full service to ensure the project’s success.”

Nick Parsons, ITEC Account Director, Somerset

“SCCC have a clear digital strategy and are embracing market-leading technology to achieve their goals. We at ITEC are excited and proud to deliver the technology based 100% around their requirements, and provide full service to ensure the project’s success,” says Nick Parsons, ITEC Account Director in Somerset. “The new WiFi solution will put SCCC at the forefront of mobility technology, making them on of the most advanced stadiums in the UK. It will provide additional revenue generation tools and seamless wireless mobility to their visitors, allowing access to exclusive social media content, replays, rewards and promotions, enhancing the experience at the ground in unprecedented ways.”

By pairing Aruba with SkyFii and Airwave, ITEC have enabled SCCC with a comprehensive and holistic approach. Our technical solution involves pairing HPE Aruba switches (Core and Edge) and high density WiFi, perfect for IoT, with SkyFii to deliver analytics from Aruba ALE. The deployment also includes using clustered controllers and mobility master, offering a fully resilient solution that is critical to SCCC on and beyond match days.

The next time the batsman hits a six, the crowd can be safe knowing they will not miss it.
